My eyes were bigger than my stomach….

I hear that often when dining with friends.  In the wild the critters fools us.  They can take on some big meals.  I’ve witnessed it many times.  One in particular is the California Gull.  Found in great numbers in Utah.  These guys can take on a meals that appear greater than just the shear size of their throats.  Recently at FBBR the annual carp kill has taken place.  The carp are floating everywhere some near death and putting in their last efforts…….

The Gulls are out in numbers sizing up the free meals.  Amazing to watch them pick fish that seem too large to intake.  The Gull will make several attempts to ingest.  Sometimes they give up.  Other times they succeed…..

The big decision before the Disney Trip….

What camera equipment to take?  I thought I would be spending a lot of time on rides.  Not taking pictures.  My first gut reaction was to take my very nice Nikon point and shoot that has HD video.  Small and easy to carry.  Almost took the point and shoot.  I have hauled my D3s’s all over the world and at times got tired carrying the camera with a nice heavy lens attached.   Then I started thinking about the rides at Disneyland.  Several rides are indoors in very low light.  Better take the D3s.

I found my ISO at 120,000 a lot.  In fact I was amazed at what the D3s was capturing.  Some subjects light was so low I could barely see the subject.  If the subject was moving it was almost impossible to get in focus.   The outcome was incredible.  Sure I don’t have pics I can push to mural size.  But I have a pretty darn good record of our trip that in no way I could have gotten with any other camera.

It makes me even more curious as to how the new F4 will perform.  I have loved my D3s’s and always amazed what they can do.  This trip was even a little over top for me and the Camera.

All the following shots are at ISO 120,000.

I had a chance to lay prone for a while today before going to the park.  The kids had already been on a bunch of rides.  Ok.  Good for me less time standing in line.  But less time with the little ones.

Today for me was Cam’s day.  His older brother was lucky to be involved with the Star Wars Jedi training.  The kids train then each one fights Darth Vador with a light saber after being trained by Jedi’s.  Today as both grandsons stood and screamed to be picked they picked Cam’s older brother again.  Cam was heart broken.  About killed Papa as I held him in my arms while he cried his eyes out.

We decided to wait another hour and try it again.  A great risk if Cam was not picked again.  He would be devastated.  THEY PICKED HIM!!!!  Moved me to tears.  Wimpy papa!

The other thing we enjoyed was going through its a small world just for Cam.  He sings as loud as he can the song throughout the whole ride.  Pretty cool.

Wow

A very long day!  Crawled back to the hotel.

Watching the kids and grand kids makes it all worth while.

In Toon Town I witnessed architecture that I pray BC will never see.  May give him ideas for our stores….

It was supposed to rain today!  A 100% chance!

It didn’t

So we planned on not going to the park today.  Instead we went to Pearl Beach!

I even got in a few bird shots…..missed my long lenses!

My duaghter took some of the photographs with my other D3s.

I was at the right place at the right time for this photo.  Antelope Island.  On the causeway.  The light was PERFECT!  The only thing to make it better for me would have been him taking off – right – me!

Nikon D3s, 600mm lens with 1.4 teleconverter.  1/5000 second at f5.6, ISO 400.  No post work.   Original pixels.

HELP!

I have searched all over for the name of this little cute y.   The closest I can find is Grace’s Warbler.  I can’t find a photo online or in my guide books that shows the little black horns though.

What do you think?  I would really like to call this one by name……

Found him at Antelope Island Saturday.  He did a lot of searching in the low brush.  I am assuming for meals?  Sure made for some fun photographs.

Had a real blast today at Antelope Island.

Found a small horned bird I have never seen before.  Probably real common.  Just never had one in my view finder.  Tons of fun stuff.  Birds, buffalo, etc. all made for a fun morning.  Then it was time to pack.  So I just finished packing.  I have to get up real early to catch my flight.  This photograph was an accident.  At times I will shoot through brush with my long lenses.  For the most part the auto focus stays on the subject. But once and a while it catches something a little closer.  Just had to post it…..
